Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine crossing is a one-way trek across the active volcano, Mount Tongariro. The crossing takes around 6-8 hours to complete and can only be done when the weather conditions are clear. The trek starts at the southern end of the mountain and crosses three volcanic cones, Mt Ngauruhoe, Mt Tongariro and Red Crater. There are a number of huts along the way that can be used for rest stops, but it is advised to bring a full set of camping gear if intending to stay overnight. Due to its location and challenging terrain, the Tongariro Alpine crossing is considered to be one of New Zealand’s top treks.

On the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, you should bring water, food, a map, and a compass. You should also dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes.

There are many reasons why the Tongariro Alpine crossing is so popular. One reason is that the hike passes by three active volcanoes: Mount Tongariro, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Ruapehu. The scenery is also incredibly beautiful, with lakes, forests, and mountains all around. The hike is also relatively easy compared to other hikes of a similar length, making it a popular choice for beginner hikers.

When doing the Tongariro Alpine crossing, there are a few things to keep in mind. The first is that it is a long hike, so come prepared with plenty of food and water. Second, the terrain is steep and can be challenging, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes. Lastly, the weather can change quickly in the alpine environment, so be prepared for all types of conditions.

The best time of year to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is in the spring or summer when the weather is more mild.
